I'm constantly trying to find new side dish recipes that not only Marc and I enjoy, but our kids will eat, too! Green beans are one of the vegetables that has a pretty neutral taste, a soft texture that my kids like, and take on whatever flavor you add to them. Bonus: they are somewhat finger food since they resemble French fries!

These Garlic Parmesan Green Beans are super easy to make and so full of flavor from the fresh garlic and grated Parmesan cheese. They're also good enough as a holiday side dish! If you're looking for something easier than a green bean casserole (although my Cream Cheese Green Bean Casserole is *quite* delish!), these Garlic Parmesan Green Beans are your best friend.

Ingredients

  • Fresh Green Beans - these green beans are SO good in the summer when green beans are in season!
  • Kosher Salt - I like using coarse kosher salt. It adds a little bit of crunch.
  • Olive Oil - the fat to cook the green beans in.
  • Fresh Garlic - four whole cloves!
  • Grated Parmesan Cheese

Refer to the recipe card for the complete list of ingredients and quantities.

Variations

Frozen Green Beans - I definitely prefer using fresh green beans for this recipe, but I have used frozen green beans before. They work in a pinch and will take less time to cook compared to fresh green beans! I definitely would not recommend using canned green beans, though.

Balsamic Vinegar - add a splash of balsamic vinegar to add a big of tangy flavor to the green beans.

Fun Toppings - these would be delicious topped with some slivered almonds, buttered breadcrumbs, fried shallots, or a splash of lemon juice.

Step by Step Instructions

Photo 1. Add the olive oil to a large pan over medium heat. Add the green beans, season with salt, and cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring often to top the green beans.

Photo 2. Once the green beans are tender, add the fresh garlic, toss well to combine, and cook another 2 minutes.

Photo 3. Last, sprinkle in the Parmesan cheese.

Photo 4. Stir to combine. Serve and enjoy!

Expert Tips

Keep Heat at Medium - don't have the heat too high or the green beans will char before they are tender.

Add a Splash of Water - sometimes I'll add a splash of water to the green beans about halfway through cooking to get them to steam a little bit.

Pick the Right Green Beans - when looking for green beans at the store, look for the bright green and plump fresh green beans that aren't browned.

Recipe FAQS

What goes with green beans?

Green beans are super versatile! I think these go really well at a holiday meal with Mayonnaise Roasted Turkey or Cranberry Glazed Ham. Or a weeknight meal like Air Fryer Salmon or Grilled Italian Chicken.
