Sweet Potato Casserole is one of my favorite dishes at Thanksgiving. I love the sweetness and a good crunchy topping, although I'm not opposed to the marshmallow version, like with my Instant Pot Sweet Potato Casserole!

Today I'm slightly switching things up with a fun and more modern take on the casserole with this Sweet Potato Apple Casserole. This dish adds another seasonal produce to the casserole and I loved it so much more than I thought I would! The sweet potatoes and apples are so perfect together and, combined with the crunchy pecan topping, the flavors and textures were so spot on. This is sure to be a huge hit at your family's holiday table!

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Minimal Ingredients - this easy casserole needs only 7 ingredients! Many of these are pantry staples like flour, brown sugar, and butter.
  • Crowd Pleaser - this is one of those casseroles that everyone will go back for seconds for!
  • Prep Ahead - this is perfect for Thanksgiving or Christmas because you can prep the casserole ahead of time and pop into the oven when you are ready.

Ingredients

Sweet Potatoes - these are peeled and sliced into half-moons (or half-half moons if you use really large sweet potatoes).

Apples - these also need to be peeled prior to slicing.

Brown Sugar - this is the main sweetener (along with the natural sweetness from the apples and sweet potatoes) in the dish.

Cinnamon - ground cinnamon adds a warm and sweet flavor to the dish .

Unsalted Butter - melted butter is used both in the filling and the crunchy pecan topping

Please refer to the recipe card for the complete list of ingredients and quantities.

Variations

Different Sweetener - instead of brown sugar in the filling, you could use honey or maple syrup.

Different Topping - if you love marshmallows on your sweet potato casserole, feel free to add them along with the pecan topping, or just replace the pecan topping with marshmallows. Be sure to keep an eye on the marshmallows for the last 5-10 minutes so they don't brown too much.

Type of Apples - I used gala apples but really any kind would like. I think Granny Smith, honey crisp, and Jonathan would all work well.

Add Citrus - some orange juice or orange citrus would be delicious, as would a squirt of lemon juice, both brightening up the dish a bit.

Different Spices - I used one teaspoon ground cinnamon to keep it simple, but you could also add ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg, or ½ teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice.

Step by Step Instructions

Photo 1. Peel and slice the sweet potatoes. I like to cut them half lengthwise and then cut them into half or quarter moons, depending on the size of the sweet potato. For the apples, peel them and then cut chunks off of the core, and then slice them into thin slices.

Photo 2. Place the sweet potatoes and apples into a bowl, along with the butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.

Photo 3. Toss the sweet potatoes and apple slices well with the spices.

Photo 4. Grease a 9x13" casserole dish with cooking spray or butter. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish.

Photo 5. In a medium bowl, mix together the melted butter, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and chopped pecans. Sprinkle it over the casserole.

Photo 6. Bake at 350 degrees covered with foil for 30 minutes. Then remove the cover and bake an additional 30 minutes. The apples and sweet potatoes should be tender and the topping should be golden brown. Serve and enjoy!

Expert Tips

Serving Suggestions - this side dish is perfect for the holidays. It would be delicious with my Mayonnaise Roasted Turkey, Cream Cheese Green Bean Casserole, and Sausage Apple Pecan Stuffing. It would also be delicious as a Sunday dinner side dish, along with my Slow Cooker French Onion Chicken, Honey Balsamic Pork Tenderloin, or Crunchy Pecan Topped Salmon.

Prep Ahead - this casserole is super easy to prep ahead to time to minimize prep time at meal time. Simply assemble the casserole according to instructions and then cover with foil or plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator until ready to bake. I would recommend letting it sit out at room temperature for 20-30 minutes prior to baking OR add 10 minutes to baking time (with foil on) to account for it being in the refrigerator.

Storage - store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.

Reheat - you can reheat leftovers in the microwave. The pecan topping might not be quite as crunchy, but you could pop it under the broiler to crisp it back up.

Recipe FAQs

Can I make Sweet Potato Apple Casserole ahead of time?

Yes! You can prep this casserole ahead of time, cover, and refrigerate until you're ready to bake it. You can also bake it 3-4 hours ahead of time, cover, and let it sit out. Then put it back in the oven for 15-20 minutes prior to serving.

What kind of apples should I use for this casserole?

I used gala, but I think honeycrisp and Granny Smith would also work really well. Really any tart or lightly sweet apple will work.
