Cream Cheese Stuffed French Toast

I don't make much of a fuss about weekday breakfasts, especially now that I have kids. The kids either have cereal, oatmeal, smoothie, or toast (or a combination of those choices!) and I stick to a smoothie or fried eggs and toast.

When the weekend rolls around, though, I like to get a little fancy with things. Everyone in our house loves traditional French toast, but sometimes I like to get fancy and make the best French toast ever - Cream Cheese French Toast! This is one of our favorite special weekend breakfast treats that is absolutely delicious and not too hard to make!

This French toast with sweet cream cheese filling recipe is so easy to make and it is perfect for a Mother's Day brunch, or any brunch, really!

Cream Cheese Stuffed French Toast

Ingredients in Cream Cheese Stuffed French Toast

  • French Bread - I like using a loaf of French bread that I can slice on my own but you can really use any kind of thick bread that you have. Brioche bread, challah, and Texas toast would also work well.
  • Cream Cheese - using room temperature cream cheese makes it easiest for spreading the sweetened cream cheese on the slices of bread.
  • Sugar - I typically use granulated sugar but brown sugar would also work.
  • Large Eggs
  • Milk
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Powdered Sugar

How to Make Cream Cheese Stuffed French Toast

As I mentioned, this easy recipe has few steps and they are all very simple!

Make the sweet cream cheese. In a small bowl, mix together the softened cream cheese and sugar until well combined and a spreadable consistency.

Assemble the stuffed French toast. Spread a layer of cream cheese on half of the bread slices and then place the remaining slices on top of the cream cheese.

Make the egg dip. In a shallow bowl or a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and a teaspoon vanilla extract.

Dip. Give each French toast "sandwich" a quick dip into the egg wash, working fairly quickly, as you don't want the French toast to be soggy.

Cook. Heat butter over medium heat in a large skillet or a griddle. Cook the stuffed French toast 4-5 minutes in the melted butter on each side, until they are golden brown.

Bake. Place all of the French toast sandwiches onto a greased baking sheet in a single layer and bake in a 375 degree oven for 12-15 minutes. This will ensure the cream cheese mixture is warmed through and the entire French toast becomes soufflé-like.

Serve. Serve this cream cheese stuffed French toast topped with warm maple syrup, strawberry jam, a dusting of powdered sugar, fresh berries, or a dollop of yogurt!

Tips for Making Cream Cheese Stuffed French Toast

Use good French or Italian loaf of bread. I think the key to the french toast is using some good Italian bread. Sure, you can use a typical loaf of sandwich bread if you have that on hand, but it won't be *quite* as good as it could be. Since this recipe has so few ingredients, and bread is the main one, it helps to use quality bread!

Sauté AND Bake. Cook the "sandwiches" in butter but then also bake them in the oven ensures the outside gets golden and a little crispy and the cream cheese gets nice and gooey.  Baking it also helps achieve that light and souffled french toast texture.

Spice it up! This French toast recipe is pretty basic (but epically delicious!) and could be jazzed up a bit, if you want. You could add some cinnamon to the egg and milk mixture, or mix in some jam, lemon zest, peanut butter, or Nutella to make flavored cream cheese filling.

Storage. Store leftover stuffed French toast in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. To reheat, bake at 375 for 15 minutes. You could also microwave but it won't have as crispy of an outside as it does if you enjoy it immediately.

  1. You and I are so alike! I do the same old fashioned oatmeal routine for breakfast M-F (except when I run out and do peanut butter toast). And on the weekends, breakfast runs the show! Love this recipe and I can't wait to try it!

  2. I'm the same way you are! During the week, I eat my old-fashioned oatmeal every day. I like to 'get crazy' on the weekends and try out new breakfasts. (I'm also a Sunday pancake-lover.)

Your french toast looks awesome. I've never though to make a sandwich with french toast and cream cheese!

  3. I used to have oatmeal for breakfast too! It really is so healthy for you. But THIS french toast creation... It has literally inginited a craving! I want some!!

  4. We made this last night! I had some half n half, so I used half a cup of that plus a half a cup of whole milk. I also used 3 eggs instead of 2 and the recipe was able to yield 7 instead of 4. 🙂 (Granted I used a normal loaf of bread from the store) My husband LOVED it! We didn't need to top it with anything. So good. Thank you for the recipe!

    1. So glad to hear this, Befu! The size of the loaf, definitely makes a difference, but that just means more for the next day, right!? 🙂

      1. Yep! I tried to stretch it as far as it would go - to make as many stuffed french toast as I could. They were so yummy!

  5. 4 stars
I made this for New Years Day. I sliced a loaf of French Bread. I also added cinnamon to the milk/egg mixture. Everyone loved it -- I did get a request to sweeten the cream cheese mixture next time. So I'll do that but I'm really happy I found this recipe!
