Big Mac Tater Tot Casserole

Big Mac Tater Tot Casserole is a delicious and easy dinner recipe that your whole family will love! A ground beef and onion mixture is combined with homemade Big Mac special sauce, topped with American cheese and crispy tater tots.

One of my most popular recipes is my Big Mac Sliders recipe, and I love the idea of making fast food at home. Since I love a good tater tot casserole (my Southwestern Tater Tot Casserole is a family favorite!), I decided to make a Big Mac Version.

I mean, a Big Mac sauce-filled meat filling topped with crispy tots, lettuce and tomato? Yes, please!

Finish it off with something sweet like No Bake Peanut Butter Pie!

Ingredients

Ground Beef - lean ground beef is the base of the filling for the Big Mac Tater Tot Casserole.

White Onion - added to the ground beef for flavor and texture.

American Cheese - you can't have a Big Mac without American cheese!

Mayonnaise - the main base of the copycat Big Mac sauce.

Ketchup - added flavor to the Big Mac sauce.

Dill Pickles - diced pickles are in the Big Mac sauce and a crucial flavor in Big Macs.

Spices - garlic powder, dried minced onion, and paprika are the main spices in the Big Mac sauce.

Frozen Tater Tots - of course you need tater tots for a tater tot casserole!

Shredded Iceberg Lettuce and Tomatoes - for topping the casserole.

Variations

Thousand Island Dressing - if you want to take a shortcut, you can use Thousand Island dressing instead of the homemade Big Mac sauce.

Different Cheese - if you don't want to use American cheese, you can use cheddar cheese instead. You could also use shredded cheese instead of slices, if that's what you have on hand or can find at your store.

Onion Powder - instead of minced onion, you can use onion powder instead.

Different Onion - no white onion? You can use a yellow onion or sweet onion instead.

Different Meat - if you want, you could use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef, although the flavor will change a little.

Add Sesame Seeds - to make this even more like a Big Mac, you can sprinkle with sesame seeds so the topping is like a sesame seed bun.

Add Some Veggies - if you want to squeeze some more veggies into dinner (don't we all?) you can toss in a 12 ounce bag of frozen mixed vegetables to the ground beef mixture.

Step by Step Instructions

Photo 1. In a medium bowl, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, diced pickles, garlic powder, minced dried onion, and paprika. Season with a pinch of salt.

Photo 2. Stir well to combine to make the Big Mac sauce.

Photo 3. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and diced white onion over medium-high heat until cooked through and softened. Drain the excess grease.

Photo 4. To the cooked beef and onion, add 1 cup of the Big Mac sauce.

Photo 5. Transfer the ground beef mixture to a greased 9x13" baking dish.

Photo 6. Top with American cheese slices.

Photo 7. Place tater tots on top of the bee. You can do this in an organized single layer, or just toss them on (like I do!). Bake at 375 degrees oven for 30 minutes, until the casserole is bubbling and the tater tots are golden brown.

Photo 8. Once baked, remove from the oven and sprinkle with shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes, along with additional Big Mac sauce. Serve and enjoy!

Expert Tips

Leftovers - store leftover big Mac casserole in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.

Reheat - you can simply reheat this in the microwave or you can put it in an oven-safe dish and reheat in the oven to get the tater tots crispy again. Bake at 400 for 10-ish minutes depending on how much you are reheating.
