Dunkaroo Dip

Dunkaroo Dip is a homemade version of the popular snack from the 90's! Made with only four ingredients, this easy dessert dip is so fun for parties and gatherings or an afternoon snack that the whole family will love.

If you're a kid of the 90's, you for sure know what Dunkaroo Dip is! I have vivid memories of opening up the plastic container filled with vanilla cookies to be dipped in vanilla frosting. While not exactly the picture of health, it was pretty delicious and apparently this popular snack is making a comeback!

I decided to make a homemade version of one of my favorite childhood snacks since I had a hard time finding them in our grocery store. I also wanted to make the homemade Dunkaroo dip recipe a tiny bit healthier. In addition to making whipped cream, I added some vanilla yogurt. I'm not sure if you'd classify this as a snack or a treat but maybe it's a combination of the two?!

Ingredients

Ingredients in Dunkaroo Dip on a gray background.

Funfetti Cake Mix - this is the main flavor in Dunkaroo dip. The cake is not baked - only the raw cake mix is used. Check out my Funfetti Birthday Ice Cream Cake for another delicious funfetti recipe!

Heavy Whipping Cream - many recipes call for Cool Whip but I like the addition of heavy cream to make homemade whipped cream instead.

Vanilla Yogurt - I used Stonyfield Organic Probiotic yogurt. The addition of yogurt keeps it creamy but healthy-ish.

Rainbow Sprinkles - you can use whatever sprinkles you like but I love using brightly colored rainbow sprinkles.

Variations

Greek Yogurt - you can use vanilla Greek yogurt if you want to add a bit of protein. The consistency will be a little thicker so you might want to add a couple tablespoons of milk to thin it out or serve it with a knife to spread it onto crackers/cookies/fruit.

Cool Whip - if you're short on time, you can use a container of Cool Whip instead of making homemade whipped cream.

Other Cake Mixes - if you want to experiment with different flavors of this dip, you can mix it up with a different type of cake mix. I think half chocolate and half funfetti would be delicious! Other ideas are lemon, strawberry, or red velvet!

More Vanilla Flavor - add a teaspoon of vanilla extract for an extra boost of vanilla flavor.

Holiday Themed - to make these for a certain holiday, make the dip with a white cake mix and then stir in holiday-themed sprinkles. This would be so fun with Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's Day or Easter sprinkles! It would also be really fun at a baby shower with pink or blue sprinkles.

Step by Step Instructions

Photo 1. Add heavy cream to a medium bowl. Beat in high with an electric mixer or hand mixer until stiff peaks form.

Photo 2. In a separate large mixing bowl, add the cake mix and yogurt and mix to combine.

Photo 3. Fold in the whipped cream and sprinkles.

Photo 4. Serve and enjoy! Our favorite dippers are vanilla wafers and apple slices.

Expert Tips

Serving Suggestions - this funfetti dip is delicious with graham crackers, Teddy grahams, pretzels, animal crackers, apple slices, vanilla wafers, any type of fresh fruit. You could also dip sugar cookies in the dip for a fun holiday treat!

Make Ahead - you can definitely make this dip ahead of time, up to 1 day in advance.

Stir in Sprinkles Gently - be careful when stirring in the sprinkles, as some brands of sprinkles will start to bleed their color into the dip. Mine did this but I stirred very gently and very little to reduce it.

Storage - store leftover dip in an airtight container or covered with plastic wrap in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days.

Recipe FAQs

Is it okay to eat raw cake mix?

It's not a concern of mine but if you’re worried about the potential harmful bacteria in the raw flour, you can heat treat it. Simply spread it out on a baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees F for 5 minutes.

Do I need to chill this cake batter dip recipe before eating it?

I like to chill mine in the refrigerator for 30 minutes prior to eating it.
