Sliders are one of those dinners my whole family gets excited about. We make Big Mac Sliders on repeat, and my Slow Cooker Garlic Parmesan Chicken Sliders are a new family favorite. I love when the slow cooker does the heavy lifting and my kids love my Slow Cooker French Onion Chicken, so I decided to create a slider version.

My kids can be picky about chicken texture, which is why I lean on the crock pot so much. Recipes like Slow Cooker Creamy Lemon Herb Chicken and Crock-Pot Chicken Rice Soup come out tender every time, and these sliders are no different. Chicken thighs cook low and slow with onions, butter, broth, and a packet of French onion soup mix until they shred with a fork.

From there, you pile the chicken onto slider buns with provolone, brush the tops with garlic butter, and bake until the cheese melts. If you like easy weeknight dinners that don't need much hands-on time, my Slow Cooker French Onion Meatballs belong in your rotation too.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

Easy - minimal prep and the chicken goes into the slow cooker with four other ingredients. The oven step is just assembling and baking.

Family Friendly - tender shredded chicken, melty cheese, and soft buns are an easy sell for kids.

Great for Busy Nights - start it in the morning or after lunch, and dinner is mostly done when you need it.

Crowd Friendly - a pan of sliders works just as well for game day or a potluck as it does for a family dinner.

Key Ingredients

Ingredients in Slow Cooker French Onion Chicken Sliders on a gray background with black text labeling each ingredient.

Boneless Skinless Chicken Thighs - thighs stay juicy over hours in the slow cooker and shred easily with a fork.

Yellow Onion - the onion softens and sweetens as it cooks, which gives the sliders their French onion flavor.

Butter - adds richness to the cooking liquid.

French Onion Soup Mix - one packet seasons the whole pot, so there's no measuring out spices.

Provolone Cheese - mild and melts beautifully, so it pairs well with the onion flavor without competing with it.

Slider Buns - soft buns that bake together in one pan and pull apart easily.

Variations and Substitutions

Chicken Breasts - boneless skinless chicken breasts will work, but they can turn out a little drier than thighs.

Different Cheese - Swiss or Gruyère lean even more into the classic French onion soup flavor.

Different Buns - Hawaiian rolls add a sweet contrast to the savory chicken and onions.

Step 4.

Slice the slider buns in half and place the bottom halves in a baking dish. Layer the provolone and shredded chicken with onions on the bottom buns, then add the top buns. Brush the melted butter mixture over the tops of the buns. Cover with foil and bake at 350 degrees F for 15 to 20 minutes, removing the foil for the last 5 minutes so the tops get golden. Enjoy!

Expert Tips

Taste before adding salt - French onion soup mix is already salty, so taste the shredded chicken before seasoning it any further.

Don't Skip the Foil - keeping the sliders covered lets the cheese melt without the buns getting too dark, and the last 5 minutes uncovered gives you toasty tops.

Make Ahead - You can cook and shred the chicken up to a day ahead, refrigerate it, then assemble and bake when you're ready.

Storage - store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. Reheat in the oven so the buns don't get chewy.

Freezer Meal - this can easily be made into a freezer meal. Simply add the chicken, onion soup mix, onion, and broth to a freezer bag. Freeze until ready to use. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight and then follow instructions.

Slow Cooker French Onion Chicken Sliders Recipe FAQs

How do I keep the sliders from getting soggy?

Let the shredded chicken drain before piling it on the buns, so the bottoms don't soak up too much liquid. I like to serve the sliders with a side of the liquid to dip it in, like a French dip sandwich.

Can I make these ahead of time?

The chicken can be cooked and shredded a day ahead. Assemble and bake the sliders right before serving so the buns stay soft.

What should I serve with these sliders?

They go great with a simple green salad, roasted veggies, or French fries for a game day spread.
