If you're looking for an easy no-bake snack that's both kid-approved and packed with wholesome ingredients, these Monster Cookie Oat Balls are the perfect solution. While I love my Monster Cookies and Monster Cookie Bars, sometimes I want something a little more wholesome for my family.

Made with oats, peanut butter, honey, mini chocolate chips, and colorful M&M's, they're everything you love about monster cookies rolled into a bite-sized snack. Best of all, they come together in just minutes with no oven required.

These energy bites have become a staple in our house for busy weekdays. Along with my Peanut Butter Protein Oatmeal Balls, I love keeping a batch in the refrigerator for after-school snacks, lunch boxes, quick breakfasts, or an afternoon pick-me-up. They're filling enough to keep everyone satisfied, but taste like a treat thanks to the combination of chocolate and peanut butter.

Key Ingredients

Oats - I typically make these using quick oats, because they are less chewy, which my kids prefer. Old fashioned oats are also an option however I would not use steel cut oats.

Almond Flour - this is used as a binder to help everything stick together.

Peanut Butter - I used natural creamy butter - the Kirkland brand from Costco is our favorite.

Substitutions and Variations

Use Mini Chocolate Chips - I used regular size chocolate chips this time when I made them, but I love using mini chocolate chips because they distribute around more evenly and result in less big chunks throughout the oat balls.

Peanut Butter Chips - if you're not a fan of butterscotch, you can swap them for peanut butter chips or just add more chocolate chips.

Customize the mix-ins - swap the mini M&M's or chocolate chips for chopped peanuts, raisins, dried cranberries, coconut, or other favorite add-ins.

Step 1. Combine the quick oats and almond flour. Give them a little stir to combine them.

Step 2. Mix together the peanut butter, honey, vanilla, and salt in a separate bowl and then add it to the dry ingredients.

Step 3. Fold in the M&Ms, semi-sweet chocolate chips, and butterscotch chips until well combined.

Step 4. Once it's all mixed together, form the mixture into ~2 tablespoon sized balls and refrigerate. Store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Enjoy!

Expert Tips

Quick Oats vs Old Fashioned Oats - you can really use either, but my kids prefer the version with quick oats as they are less chewy. I like them both ways!

Storage - store these oat balls in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 7 days.

Chill before rolling - if the mixture feels sticky, refrigerate it for 15-20 minutes before forming the balls. This makes rolling much easier.

Freezer Instructions - simply place them on a parchment lined baking sheet and freeze for 2-3 hours. Then transfer them to a freezer bag and store in the freeze for up to 3 months. Let them sit at room temperature for a few minutes before enjoying.

Do Monster Cookie Oat Balls need to be refrigerated?

While they can sit at room temperature for a few hours, it's best to store monster cookie oat balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Chilling helps them hold their shape and keeps them fresh longer.

Why won't my Monster Cookie Oat Balls stick together?

If the mixture seems too dry, add a little more peanut butter or honey, one tablespoon at a time, until the mixture holds together when pressed. Chilling the mixture can also help.

Are Monster Cookie Oat Balls healthy?

These oat balls are made with wholesome ingredients like oats, peanut butter, and honey, making them a satisfying snack with protein and fiber. While they do contain chocolate chips and M&M's, they're a great balance of nutritious and fun.
