Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 8 tablespoon unsalted butter, cold
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoon milk
  • additional granulated sugar, for topping

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt, and whisk well to combine.
  • Using a cheese grater, grate the butter into the flour mixture and then combine the butter and flour together. You can do this using a pastry cutter or your fingers. Note: if you don't have a cheese grater, you can just cut the cold butter into small cubes.
  • Stir in the chocolate chips.
  • Add the buttermilk and vanilla extract, and stir until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  • Transfer to a floured surface and knead into an 8-9" circle.
  • Cut the circle into 8 wedges. First cut the circle in half and then cut each half into four wedges.
  • Place onto a parchment paper lined baking sheet, keeping at least ½" between each scone.
  • Brush each scone with milk and then sprinkle with sugar.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, until slightly golden and baked through.
  • Enjoy!

Notes

Grate the butter. My number one tip for making scones is to freeze the butter and then grate it with a vegetable grater. It makes the butter much easier to incorporate into the flour mixture, and for me it feels easier than dicing the butter!
Eggs in Scones. Sometimes you will find an egg in a scone recipe, but I prefer scones without eggs, as it makes a flakier scone.
Use Fresh Baking Powder. Check your expiration date of your baking powder to make sure you have the best results! Baking powder should be less than a year old and will fizz immediately in hot water.
Don't Over Mix. Be careful not to overman the dough, as it will create a tough texture in the scones.
Storage. Store leftover scones in an airtight container in the fridge for 4-5 days.
