Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
Using a cheese grater, grate the cold butter into the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work the butter and flour together until it resembles pea-sized clumps.
Stir in the chocolate chips.
In a small bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, vanilla, and mashed banana and add to the flour mixture.
Mix the buttermilk/banana mixture with the flour mixture until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
Transfer the mixture to a floured surface and form into a 8-9" circle/disc.
Cut into 8 wedge-shaped scones.
Place on the parchment paper lined baking sheet and bake for 20-22 minutes, until golden brown and baked through.
